They moved to Warren County, Illinois, where they began their family. Their first-born son died as an infant and Margaretta gave birth to ten more: David, William, Cassius, James, Charles, Nettie, Robert, Lawrence, Lois, and Maggie. During their time in Illinois, the family changed their name to Lawhead.
In 1880, the family moved to Mount Ayr, Iowa, and in 1891 to Welda, Kansas. They were active in the United Presbyterian Church.
