Robert was the son of William and Martha (Jackson) Laughead of Greene County, Ohio. His grandparents were David and Elizabeth (Mitchell) Laughead and Robert and Elizabeth (McCorkle) Jackson. He married his childhood sweetheart, Margaretta Jane, daughter of David and Isabel Elder, on Sept 30, 1851.

They were active in the United Presbyterian Church and the Republican Party.

Robert and Margaretta moved to Warren County, Illinois, where they began their family. Their first-born son died as an infant and Margaretta gave birth to ten more: David, William, Cassius, James, Charles, Nettie, Robert, Lawrence, Lois, and Maggie. During their time in Illinois, the family changed their name to Lawhead.

Robert served in Company C, 83rd Division, Illinois Regiment Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He became an elder in his church.

In 1880, the family moved to Mount Ayr, Iowa, and in 1891 to Welda, Kansas.
