Dewitt enlisted on August 21, 1862 at Spring Prairie, WI and mustered in as a Private in Company I of the 28th Wisconsin Volunteers of October 14, 1862 at Milwaukee, WI. The Company Descriptive Book described him as 5'5" with grey eyes, brown hair, light complexion and thick build. He enlisted for three years and served continuously until he was taken ill after the Battle of Helena on July 4, 1863. {Pension Application # 214884]

DeWitt was a member of Co. I of Wisconsin's 28th Regiment Infantry. He entered service at Spring Prairie, Walworth County, Wis., on Aug. 21, 1862. He died of disease on Aug. 4, 1863, at Helena, Ark.
