Daughter of Elmer Lee "Pete" and Martha E. Van Cleave Cowan.
Married Donald E. Houston. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include companion Edwin J. Foss; daughter Sarah (James) Dicks; sons David and Daniel (Teresa) Houston; 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by brothers Frederick and Max Cowan.

1948 graduate of Crawfordsville High School, where she was secretary of her senior class.
Earned a bachelor of science degree from Butler University in 1952, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Received a master of science degree from Indiana State University and an Indiana Nursing Home Administrator License.

Taught in Indiana public school systems for 10 years.
In 1970, she assumed management responsibilities at Ben Hur Home, eventually growing the Houston Companies to include skilled nursing facilities, group homes, a pharmacy, a home health care agency, an ambulance company, and a centralized laundry service.

Memberships included the Indiana Health Care Association's Board of Directors holding the offices of Secretary, Second Vice-President, First-Vice President, and President, board member of the American Health Care Association, President of the Indiana Chapter of the American College of Nursing Home Administrators, the Governor’s Indiana Job Training Coordinating Council, member of the Board of Directors of the Central Indiana Health Systems Agency, member of the Board of Directors of the Private Industry Council, member of the Comprehensive Health Planning, Region IV, member of Title IV - Technical Review for Indiana Commission on the Aged and Aging, Board Member and President of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, and Board Member of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.
She was a Republican Party Precinct Committee Woman, a Division Chairperson of the Montgomery County United Fund, member of the Crawfordsville Art League, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the League of Women Voters, and First United Methodist Church of Crawfordsville.
In 1972, she was elected Nursing Home Administrator of the year by the State Activity Directors’ Association. On May 3, 1990, Governor Evan Bayh awarded her the Sagamore of the Wabash.

Service 2:30pm Wednesday, July 29 at First United Methodist Church, Crawfordsville.
Visitation 11am-2pm.
