Fred graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1949 and Bradley University with a degree in watch making. He honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.
He owned jewelry stores in Crawfordsville and Zionsville before going to work with his mother as an LPN at the Ben Hur Nursing Home. He then decided to pursue his life-long dream of becoming a professional puppeteer. The handcrafted puppets he would create have brought joy and smiles to countless audiences of all ages around the globe. He had shows in Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Mexico, Canada and throughout the United States. Many of his shows are still being performed in the United States and as far away as South Africa. The Cowan Marionettes performed at the Whitehouse for Presidents, Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. While living in Lebanon, he worked for Cowan Drugs.
Fred is survived by a brother, a sister, a grandson, several stepchildren and nieces and nephews.
Fred will be laid to rest at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Crawfordsville with Graveside Rites on October 18, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. Rev. Anthony Stone will officiate the service.
