Herbert Clark Stokey, 86, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his Napa home on Wednesday, September 28, 2016.

Herb (Bucky) Stokey was born on September 8, 1930 to Nicholas and Katherine Stokey in Lewellen, Nebraska. He was the youngest of 13 children and was orphaned at the age of 5. He was raised by his older sister Mary and her husband Edwin Hurlburt.

Herb was a graduate of Napa High School. In 1951 he married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Peggy Holder, after joining the US Marine Corps. Herb served in the Korean War, then continued his education at Humboldt, Sonoma and Sacramento State Universities where he received his bachelors degree and teaching degree. He was a dedicated school teacher and educator in the Napa Valley Unified School District for more than 35 years. He also worked for the United States Postal Service.

An exceptional and promising baseball player in his youth, Herb remained an avid sports fan after his baseball career was cut short by a serious injury. He also loved gardening, woodworking, camping in the redwoods, his pets and most of all spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Herb is predeceased by his beloved wife Peggy; parents Nicholas and Katherine; brothers Fred, Glenn, Raymond, Charles, John, Vernon, Joseph and Edward; sisters Mary, Lucy, Clara and Ida; and brother in-law Ricard Holder. Herb is survived Herbert by sons, David (Sherry), Paul, Tom (David Gumina); grandchildren Shawndra Stokey (Dan Speer), Adam Stokey (Eden), Erin Barnett (Brian); great grandchildren Kaeden, Mason, Evan, Brooklyn and Hudson, and great great granddaughter Daniella.

He is also survived by his brother in law John Holder (Carol), sister in law Carolyn Holder and sister in law Charlene Stokey, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Private services and internment will be held at Tulocay Cemetery on Coombsville Road in Napa.

The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to his dedicated caregivers Ivy, Marissa and Ronette, as well as to Thi Thi, Sheila, Cheyeanne and Alona for the excellent care, kindness and love they gave to Herb during his lengthy illness.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made in Herbs name to Napa Humane Society or Pets Lifeline of Sonoma.
