Joe H. Stokey
A resident of Lewellen for several years, Joe Stokey, 47, died in Ogallala Saturday [September 15, 1962]. He had been in good health just moments before his death and doctors attributed his demise to a heart attack.
Mr. and Mrs. Stokev we at the Valley motel at the time. They were taking care of it during an absence of the owners.
Born March 6, 1915, at Pueblo, [editor: Colorado] he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Stokey. He grew up in Pueblo, Denver and areas, attending school in all three communities, the family moving to Lewellen in 1956.
September 15, 1938, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Mardis. They lived at Lewellen until 1952 when they moved to Ogallala where they have made their home. He was a member of the Methodist church.
Survivors include his wife Sarah; one son, Harold Stokey of Haigler; eight brothers, Ed and Vernon Stokey of Lewellen, John, Charles and Raymond Stokey of Norwalk, California, Glen Stokey of Gardena, California, Herbert Stokey of Nampa, Idaho, and Fred Stokey of Omaha, three sisters, Mrs. Mary Hurlburt and Mrs. Lucy Sullivan of Nampa and Miss Clara Stokey; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday morning in the Memorial chapel of the Bracken Funeral home in Ogallala. Burial was in the Ash Hollow cemetery near Lewellen.
