She was daughter of Jeremiah Augustus and Blanche Elsie (Allen) Desmond. In 1910 the family lived on the Aroostook Road in Mount Chase, ME. At that time there were 4 children: Hazel, Verna, Iva and Pearl. Also in the house were Jeremiah's older brother, Riley, and their mother Matilda.

She married Raymond Clifford Prescott on 14 Aug 1918 in Crystal, ME. They were living in his parents' home on Patten Road at the time of the 1920 U.S. Census, and he was a laborer on a farm. They had one daughter, Verna, by this time.

By 1930 they owned, operated and lived on a farm on Bog Brook Road in Crystal, ME. Their kids with them at that time were: Verna, Marion, Dorothy, Vivian, Ronald and Margaret.

By 1940 they were still farming, and Verna and Marion had married out of the house. New children added to the household by 1940: Doris, Rita, Kenneth, Hazel and Hilda.

From one of the daughters, Hilda, it was said that every time another child was born to Ray and Iva... Ray would go into town and proclaim that he had another million dollars in his pocket... another worker to help on the farm...
