Sewanee, Tenn - July 6 - Ephraim Kirby-Smith, 54, of Franklin, Louisiana, died unexpectedly here tonite at the home of his brother, Dr R M Kirby-Smith.

A son of the late Confederate General and Mrs Edmund Kirby-Smith, he was educated at the University of the South here, where his father was Professor of Mathematics.

He was for many years engaged in mining operations in Mexico, later being affiliated with sugar refineries in Cuba. For the last several years, he had made his home at Franklin, where he had been connected with a sugar refinery.

He is survived by his widow, the former Miss Polly Brooks of Sewanee; one son, Ephraim Jr, 3 daughters, Mrs Harold Henshaw, Misses Catherine and Ellen Kirby-Smith all of Franklin, LA; one brother Dr Kirby-Smith of Sewanee and 4 sisters, Mrs Lydia Hale and Mrs Caroline Krolly of Sewanee; Mrs Frances Wade of Union City, TN and Mrs Roades Fayerweather of Baltimore, MD.
