RICE, Ellen Kirby-Smith, age 75 of Sewanee, passed away the morning of Saturday, July 12, following a brave fight with cancer. The last surviving granddaughter of Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith, she was born on November 20, 1927 in Sewanee to Ephriam Kirby-Smith and Polly Brooks Kirby-Smith. She attended the University of Mississippi and was a stewardess for Delta Airlines. Before returning home to Sewanee in 2000, she was a resident of metropolitan Atlanta from 1955, having lived in Avondale Estates, Atlanta and Atlanta Country Club Estates. She was an avid gardener, a sometime golfer and an enthusiastic world traveler. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Louis W. Rice, Jr. of Sewanee, a brother, Col. Ephriam Kirby-Smith, USMC (ret.) of Newport Beach, Calif., and her two children, Louis W. Rice III of Decatur, Ga. and Laura Brooks Rice of Princeton, N.J. Service will be Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Otey Memorial Parish Church, Sewanee followed by interment at the University of the South Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of the Highland Rim, 110 E. Lauderdale St., Tullahoma, TN 37388 or to the University of the South/Abbo's Alley, 735 University Ave., Sewanee, TN 37375.
