Mrs. Nellie Waite died January 25, 1954 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Blanche Sutton of Gays, Illinois.

Funeral services were held at Union Chapel Church in Jefferson County with burial in the cemetery there.

Nellie Marie Souers married William Newton Waite in 1896 in Jefferson County, Illinois. Their children were Leola Irene, Helen Elizabeth, Henry Goodin, Merle Alma, John Newton, Mabel Catherine, Bessie Louise, Hallie Blanche, Robert Eugene, and George William Waite. All survive. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; a sister, Annie B. Patterson of Sacramento, California; and brother the Rev. Merritt Souers of Pinckneyville, Illinois.

Nellie was the daughter of Jacob Goodin Souers and Catherine Chamberlain. Note: Although some spell Catherine's name with a K, she apparently spelled it with a "C" when filling out pension forms for Jacob. Jacob's gravestone has his surname spelled "Sours". Possibly a transcription error on the part of the military.
