BURIAL: Westview Gardens
GASTONIA — A 37-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with his girlfriend's death in a fatal wreck.
Chaalan Khalil Bitar, 4501 Forest Cove Road, Belmont, also was charged with driving while impaired when Amanda Lattimore of Clover, S.C., was killed.
A Gaston County grand jury returned the indictments.
District Attorney Mike Lands said the case went directly to the grand jury rather than having charges filed through the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Lands said the routine processing was delayed because the investigating trooper was Nathanael Edward Perkins, also indicted Tuesday. Perkins, 24, 1240 Hudson Blvd., Gastonia, faces a rape charge.
Lands said Bitar was driving south on New Hope Road about midnight on Aug. 31, 2001. Lattimore was a passenger in the 1997 BMW when it ran off the road and hit a utility pole.
Both Bitar and Lattimore were thrown from the car, Lands said. Neither was wearing a seat belt.
Bitar also was injured and taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital where surgery was required. Because of his injuries, no blood sample was taken as potential evidence.
Lands said the state got a court-ordered copy of Bitar's medical record with a blood alcohol level. He would not say what the level was.
