Daughter of George Frederick Stainbrook and Agnes Belle Huling. Married William Van Deventer 2 June 1865. He was the son of Christopher Columbus Van Deventer and Miranda Salisbury. Two children: Cora Francis who married Arthur Erbe Jr. and Maximilian Christopher who married Jessie Brouillet, Bessie Miller Andrus, Winnie E. Connor and Arline Baker.

After their marriage the couple lived in Earlville, LaSalle Co., Illinois where William was a barber. In 1880 Sarah and the children are in Earlville; while William recorded in 1880 as a Dr., is in Colorado prospecting for gold.

It is not known whether he ever returned to his family in Earlville. He appears later in the 1880s in Chicago as a dentist before relocating to Tacoma, Washington with a new wife. Sarah filed for divorce in LaSalle Co. in the 1890s. About the same time she moved to Chicago with her son Max, and remained there for the rest of her life supporting herself as a dressmaker.

She is in an unmarked grave at Ellsworth Cemetery.
