Helen Basarich, 94, of Woodburn, Ore., died Feb. 27, 2013, in Portland, Ore. She was born April 15, 1918, in Nashwauk to George and Mary (Ivancevich) Njegovan.
She grew up in Minnesota and attended school here, including the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where she earned a bachelor's degree. Helen married Robert Basarich in Minnesota in 1939. He died in 2009. In 1977, they moved to Woodburn, Ore., where she enjoyed square dancing and sang in the First Presbyterian Church choir. She was mostly a homemaker, but did work for a short time as a grocery clerk and then as a retail clerk for JC Penney's for about 12 years. Eventually, her health caused her to move in 2008 to Portland, Ore., where she resided until her death.
She is survived by daughters: Mary Ann (Ray) Vesel and Roberta Jean (Lyle) Adams; brother, Robert Njegovan; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Inurnment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing.
