Her parents, Samuel and Mary (Jones) Coddington were prosperous residents of Allegany County, Maryland. On January 1, 1819, Ann Coddington married John Frey, an attorney, in Allegany county, Maryland. They first lived on her father's farm along with her sister Charlotte Coddington Frey who had married her brother-in-law, Dr. William Frey. The Freys can be found in the 1820 census on the Coddington Farm, but had moved to Addison twp, Somerset County, Pennsylvania by the 1830 census, where John Frey was practicing law. Anne was widowed in 1832 and is mentioned lovingly in his will as "Ann". The various spellings of her name are Ann, Anna, and Anne according to her marriage record,1840 census, her father's will and her husband's will.
