Joseph Stein was born Sept. 3, 1935, at Timmer, the son of Anton and Minnie (Zentner) Stein. He was educated at St. Mary's Grade School and St. Mary's Central High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years overseas, most of that time in France.
After returning from the service, he went to work as an insurance salesman for American Republic Insurance. He later worked for Atlas Inc. He met and married Donna Mae Pfenning on Oct. 14, 1961. Together they raised three children. He retired from Atlas in 1994, and moved to Arizona. He married Karen (Ketterling) Engel on Oct. 21, 2000.
He was a lifetime member of the Bismarck Eagles, the Amvets and the American Legion Post No. 0062 of Sun City, Ariz. Joe enjoyed playing cards, working crossword puzzles, his daily swim and watching sports on TV, especially cheering for the Atlanta Braves and Green Bay Packers. But, most important was spending time with family and friends.
