A few years after her birth the family moved to St Johnsbury, VT where her father long practiced medicine.
She was educated in the public schools and St Johnsbury Academy and later taught in one of St Johnsbury's district schools and in the village schools.
With the exception of three years spent in Minneapolis, Minnesota they have always lived in St Johnsbury, VT.
She is survived by her husband Robert; two sons Robert S of Washington and Hugh A MacKinnon of Utica, NY; one brother Dr Henry C Newell of St Johnsbury, VT; three sisters Mrs George H Bradford of Sherbrooke, Quebec; Mrs Henry G Ely of St Johnsbury, VT; Miss Etta M Newell of Hanover, NH.
