Charles served as a Private in Company A, 19th Vermont Infantry during the Civil War. During his service, h e served as Clerk for Captain Frost and Captain Dewey. He mustered in December 5, 1863, and mustered out May 13, 1865.
From the death announcement published in The St Johnsbury Caledonian (St. Johnsbury, Vermont) October 24, 1889: "Dr. Newell was a son of the late Dr. Selim Newell of this place. He had been in the practice of dentistry here up until about a year ago when he went to Seattle, Washington, where a brother-in-law already resided. His family followed him to his far Western home this summer and all letters from there have spoken of improved health up until the time of the fatal stroke. No particulars have been received except that Dr. and Mrs. Kilbourne started East with the remains on Tuesday last.
Dr. Charles Newell was upright in his living and skilful in his profession. His untimely death will be felt by a large circle of friends and acquaintances."
