The 6 existent cemeteries in the town of St Johnsbury, Caledonia County, Vermont are: Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Mount Calvary Cemetery (Catholic), Centervale aka St Johnsbury Center Cemetery (New), Saint Johnsbury Center Cemetery (Olde), Grove aka Forest Grove Cemetery, Goss Hollow aka Coles Corner Cemetery.

History: The St Johnsbury Cemetery Association was organized May 20 1851, they adopted the name "Mount Pleasant Cemetery". The grounds were laid out under the direction of J. H. Sackett, landscape architect of Springfield, Mass in the spring of 1853; and the grounds dedicated that June. The "Perpetual Care Fund" was begun at the d. of Ephraim Jewett in 1866; he had bid off the first choice of lots in 1853. The general expense of upkeep is provided by the sale of lots and by fees for opening and closing graves.
A receiving vault and pavilion was constructed in 1870 by the Fairbanks Scale Company; the Fairbanks family were Congregationalist who staunchly believed in "giving back to the town" which benefited them and which, in turn, grew as a result of their business enterprise. They rebuilt, enclosed, enlarged, and modernized the chapel/pavilion in 1907.
The most conspicuous object in the cemetery remains the granite obelisk of the Ide family erected in 1893, a monolith of 35 tons that rises 32 feet from its base, it commands the eastern most corner of the cemetery overlooking the Passumpsic River.
Near this is the lot presented in 1886 by the Cemetery Association to the Grand Army of the Republic veterans who placed upon it a gray granite statue of a soldier with his percussion cap rifle. There are 4 veterans buried in this lot.
