Verna Lou McCluskey was the oldest child of Nettie Viola (Hargis) and Clarence Elmore McCluskey. She was born September 17, 1929 at Seminole, Oklahoma. Her father worked for Continental Oil Company and the family moved to different towns in the area. Verna went to school at Seminole, Holdenville, Wewoka and graduated from Bowlegs High School in 1947. She attended Seminole Junior College after high school. She and Lester Lee Bottoms were married on December 25, 1948, in Seminole. They had four sons. Verna was a homemaker, school and Boy Scout volunteer leader while the boys were growing up. While the family was living at Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, she worked in the city offices and was a foster mother. Later she worked as a nurse's aide and was a church and community volunteer. In 1989, she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Northwestern Oklahoma State University at Alva, Oklahoma. At that time, she was the oldest person in Oklahoma to receive that particular degree. She then worked as a Registered Nurse in the communities where she and Lester resided until his retirement as a United Methodist minister. They retired to Wagoner, Oklahoma, where both were active members of the church and community. They hosted holiday events for their family and were actively involved in genealogy research. Lester and Verna were both very involved in the World War II Submarine Veterans organization and traveled frequently to in-state and out-of-state meetings.

Verna passed away Sunday morning, Feb. 5, 2006, at the Kaiser Rehabilition Facility at Hillcrest Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the age of 76. She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Lester Lee Bottoms of the home; her four sons and their wives; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2006, in the First United Methodist Church of Wagoner with the Rev. Randy Mitchell officiating.

Interment followed the funeral services at 3 p.m. in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole where she was laid to rest beside her mother and father. Funeral arrangements and services were under the direction of Hersman-Nichols Funeral Home of Wagoner. (parts of obituary from Wagoner Tribune, Wagoner, OK)
