Kenneth Harold Hartman, the son of Carl Phillip Hartman Sr. and Lillie Bertha (Leetsch), was born March 14, 1928 on the Hartman farmstead near Rosemont, Nebraska. He departed this life peacefully, at his home in Guide Rock, Thursday, November 13, 2014, at age 86 years, 7 months, and 30 days.

Kenneth was raised on the farm and grew up in the Rosemont / Guide Rock area. He was confirmed in the Rosemont Presbyterian Church and received his formal education attending rural school district #83 and then graduated from Eckley Consolidated School with the class of 1945. On July 23, 1949 he was united in marriage with the love of his life, May Elizabeth Figgins. They farmed north of Red Cloud, Nebraska from 1945-1955 and had four children, David, Karen, Daniel, and Kenneth, Jr.

After a devastating house fire destroyed their home and belongings, and enduring the loss of their infant son, Kenneth, Jr. to illness, they moved their family to northern Colorado in 1957, where daughter, Kenda, was later born. Working odd jobs, Kenneth supported his family by repairing appliances, selling Amway products, and worked as a dairy herdsman at several area dairies before purchasing his own herd of cattle and moving to Loveland in 1966. In 1970, their family grew again when Ken and May became legal guardians of two-month-old Lauri. In 1973, Kenneth purchased his own property north of Fort Collins on Taft Hill Road. Two more children, Eric (18 mo) and Alisa (3 mo), became part of the family, in 1981, when Ken and May assumed their legal guardianships. Kenneth continued dairying until 1994, when he sold his herd and retired.

During their years in Colorado, Kenneth also served as president of Northern Colorado Water Association for thirty years and as a delegate to the Colorado Rural Water Association. Kenneth and May represented the organizations at many national conventions in the interest of providing drinking water to Northern Colorado. After selling the dairy, Ken and May moved into Fort Collins. Kenneth became a driver for the Denver Rescue Mission at Harvest Farm in Wellington, CO for eight years and volunteered for a local food ministry. They enjoyed trips to Palisade, CO each autumn, and provided delicious peaches to family and friends.

A man of deep faith, Kenneth showed his devotion to God by serving in many churches, in roles such as Sunday School superintendent, deacon, food ministry and funeral dinner helper, and especially enjoyed teaching adults about His wonderful Lord. In the 1960’s, Kenneth along with children, Karen and Daniel, sang gospel songs on local radio station KCOL in Fort Collins.

Kenneth and May left Colorado in 2008 and returned to Nebraska, settling in the Guide Rock community to enjoy their retirement years surrounded by family and friends.

In his leisure time, Kenneth enjoyed reading, woodworking, making wooden trains for children, gardening, fixing things, baking pies, crocheting lap blankets for nursing homes, and most of all, yard work on his lovely Guide Rock property. He always looked forward to daily coffee time with his favorite neighbor, his twin brother, Keith. Kenneth possessed an immeasurable love for his family and the Lord and always displayed a strong passion for both. His quick smile and calm disposition made him a friend to everyone who knew him.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his dear wife, May, infant son, Kenneth, Jr., sisters, Ann Morgan and Mildred Schaffer, and brothers Delbert, Carl Jr., Edwin, Duane, and Marlin Hartman.

Surviving are his family David Hartman and wife, Judy, Karen Nelson and husband, Wayne, Daniel Hartman and wife, Pamela, Kenda Peter and husband, Arnold, Lauri Mink and husband, John, Eric Walker, and Alisa Hartman; 15 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; brothers, Keith Hartman and wife, Daisie, and Marvin Hartman; and many other relatives and dear friends.

Memorial services will be held April 25,, 2015 at 1:00pm at Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud. Those who knew Kenneth are encouraged to attend as there will be an open time of sharing.
