“The following is copied from the St. Johnsbury Caledonian of last week: “Phoebe B. French, wife of the late F. V. Powers, died very suddenly Saturday afternoon (April 11) at her home on Cherry street. Three weeks previous she slipped on the ice and fractured her hip, which made her helpless. She suffered no pain and on Saturday was feeling unusually well. Soon after dinner she complained of a strange feeling in her heart and in a few minutes was gone. Death was caused by apoplexy. Mrs. Powers was the oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Orrin French and was born in Glover in 1833. She attended the Orleans Liberal Institute in Glover and taught school until her marriage to Mr. Powers. They resided in Waterford for a time then moved to Summerville, where they lived until Mr. Powers' death nine years ago. Since then she has made her home with her sisters, Misses Hattie and Lucy French. Mrs. Powers was brought up in the Universalist church and has been a most influential member of the church here. She was treasurer of the Ladies' Circle for 17 years and has held the office of collector for the parish. Since her husband's death she has lived for the church and only a few know how much she has done for it. She had a rare gift of management which made her an invaluable member of the church. She guarded every interest of the church, while her faithful attendance at all church services was an inspiration to all. Those who have heard her papers at the union missionary meetings know she possessed considerable literary ability. She leaves two brothers, Samuel French of Glover and Nathan French of London. Ontario, and three sisters, Mrs. Carlton Felch and Misses Hattie and Lucy French. The funeral was held at the church of the Messiah Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. A. F. Walch. Interment was at Mt. Pleasant cemetery.” (Orleans County Monitor, 20 Apr 1908)
