This Memorial Monument was erected in memory of the life of Lt. Joseph L. B. Nevil, a CSA Officer, killed in battle on August 28, 1862, during the Second Battle of Manassas, in the State of Virginia. His remains were interred on the battlefield and remain in Virginia. This memorial erected here in the Thomas Nevil Cemetery for that reason; i.e., His remains are still on or near that battlefield in Virginia.

The inscription on the Memorial Stone consists of the following Epitaph:
QUOTE:
MEMORIAL of the death of JOSEPH L., B son of Thomas and Rachel Nevill who was born Oct. 9th 1840 and was killed 28th of August 1862 at the second battle of Manassas in Virginia and his remains are yet there. Our son left us in the bloom of life at the call for volunteers to meet the invader but little did we know that war would bring such strife. In mournful words we trust his soul's in Heaven.
UNQUOTE.

My observations: The inscription has a comma after the L in Joseph's name, then there is a capital B with no period or comma after the B which I thug would be the abbreviation for his third given name, however since there was a comma and not a period after the L then I deduce the B may be for the word born (this, then, would read in part "Joseph L, born son of Thomas and Rachel Nevill). If my observation are turn, then his name is JOSEPH L. NEVIL and not JOSEPH L. B. NEVIL. For this record, however, his name is listed as JOSEPH L. B. NEVIL. Also note the spelling variation of the family name as NEVILL in lieu of NEVIL. Joseph was a CSA lieutenant, however, the memorial erected by family evidently did not thing to include his rank and unit on the memorial stone. If anyone can identify the name of his unit, and the commanding officer of his regiment and other leading officers it will be greatly appreciated and included herein for the record.
