Vera Mae Sims Strickland was born on March 12, 1936 to Pressly and Wilma Sims. She entered Heaven’s gates on March 20, 2017. Vera was one of twelve children, with 10 of her siblings having predeceased her: Lillian Sims Williams, Nell Sims Young, Robert Edward Sims, Margaret Sims Koon, William Jennings Sims, Macie Sims Witherspoon, Mary Sims Bailey, Sarah Sims Poe, James Marion Sims and Earl Eugene Sims.

Vera was also predeceased by her loving husband of 59 years, James Henry Strickland. She is survived by her daughter Pam Strickland Buck (Seldon) and her son James Timothy Strickland (Howard Nettles), her brother Fred Jackson Sims, and many nieces and nephews.

Vera had a servant's heart and through the years she served and cared for those in her family, her church and her community. She worked many years for the Darlington County Recreation Department and retired in 1999. She was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church in Darlington.
The family would like to offer special thanks to Elmcroft Heartland Village and Agape Hospice and to their workers for their compassion and excellent care and for making Vera's final days comfortable and peaceful.

The family will receive friends at the home of Tim Strickland, 103 Georgia Drive, Darlington. Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Belk Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home in Darlington, with burial following in Grove Hill Cemetery.
