Bertha was born June 2, 1883 in Florence, Colorado to Nicholas Taylor and Luemma O'Keefe. After 1880 Luemma took her children and settled in Asotin, Washington after deciding her husband was "too chummy" with The Dalton Gang in Missouri.

Bertha married first, William Joe Sarter. They had 3 children; Mildred A. Sarter Guiley, William Harold Sarter and Raymond Leroy Sarter.

In 1917 she married second, William Harvey Wamsley (1874-1936). William was married first to Mamie Abel, with whom he had 2 children.
Bertha and William had 3 children; Kenneth Lorraine Wamsley (1918-1998), Bernadine Florence Wamsley Erb (1920-1994) and Doris L. Wamsley Duke (1921-1984)
