Joseph "Joe" Stencel passed away August 26, 2014, at Life Care, Greeley. He was formerly living at The Greeley Place, Greeley. He was born February 20, 1926, on a farm near Pierce, CO, with his twin brother, Benjamin to John & Marie (Schwab) Stencel, who immigrated in 1907 from Hussenbach, Russia of the Volga River Region. They were the 8th & 9th children of the family and were the youngest. Joe married Evelyn M. Lohr in Greeley, CO on February 10, 1946 and they had 4 children. They were married for 65 years when Evelyn passed away on August 19, 2011.

Joe attended schools in the Pierce & Galeton areas. He and Evelyn farmed in the areas surrounding Greeley from 1946 to 1970, when they moved to Eaton. He continued working in the agriculture industry, retiring from the Road & Bridge Department of Weld County in 1990.

Joe was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Eaton, CO since 1970. He was a 4-H leader for 8 years and coached many of his children's 4-H basketball, volleyball and softball teams.

He was an enthusiastic spectator and supporter of all his grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's school and summer activities. The most cherished memories of his grandchildren are seeing Grandpa & Grandma cheering them on at all of their activities and the many summer camping trips eating fried chicken and mashed potatoes with gravy after a day of fishing with Grandpa. He enjoyed watching the Broncos, Nuggets, Rockies and especially the Eaton Reds teams. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Weld County, and enjoyed bowling and playing pool with his many friends at the Greeley Sr. Center.

After retiring, Joe was a member of the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association and travelled to many of the World Tournaments where he placed in the top 10 several times. He was inducted into the Colorado Horseshoe Pitchers Association Hall of Fame in 2003. He also won several medals participating in the Senior Olympics.

Joe is survived by his 2 sons, 2 daughters, twin brother, 13 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn, and his parents; brothers, Henry, John Jr., Fred, and Reuben; sisters, Irene Miller, Lydia Pappenheim and Esther Foos; and great grandson Antonio Zamora.
