Nels Fardahl, the son of John J. Fardahl and his wife, Gunhilda Skarbo Fardahl, was born on June 28, 1904, at Adams, MN. On July 24th of that year he was baptized at the Little Cedar Lutheran Church at Adams, and he confirmed his Christian faith in that church on May 5, 1918.

Nels attended Adams High School and was graduated with the Class of 1926. He was also a graduate of the University of Minnesota in Architectural Engineering. Upon graduation he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army.

He worked with the Civil Conservation Corps in the 30's and that is how he first came to Decorah. He supervised the building of the trout hatchery and the runs here, as well as the stone work and buildings in Phelps Park. It was while he was in Decorah that he met Irene Musser. They were united in marriage here at First Lutheran Church on February 22, 1936.

Nels went from Reserves to Active Duty on January 2, 1941, and served throughout World War II. He was Post Engineer in the Philippines and on Okinawa. He remained in the reserves until 1964, and was retired as a Lt. Colonel. Nels and Irene came back to Decorah in 1963. He worked part-time in the Winneshiek County Engineer's Office into the 1970's.

Nels died in the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home on January 12, 1991, at the age of 86 years, 6 months, and 15 days. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, by 4 brothers and 1 sister. He is survived by his mother-in-law, Julia Musser of Decorah; by two nieces, Arla Green of Decorah and Sandy Steward of West Union, Ohio; by a nephew, James Musser of Denver, Colorado' by a grandniece, Alicia Green of Decorah, and by a sister-in-law, Esther Fardahl of Austin, MN.
