OBITUARY - LUCAS JAMES KIMES
Lucas James Kimes, age 91, beloved father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2014 in Seattle, Washington.
Lucas was born in Van Buren, Arkansas on February 15, 1923 to Joseph and Edith Kimes.
In November 1929, the family left their Arkansas farm and traveled in their Model T to the San Joaquin Valley in California. Lucas grew up in Porterville and graduated from Porterville Union High School in 1940. He studied engineering at University of Colorado, Boulder, then served on active duty from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific Theater with the United States Naval Reserve.
He joined the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company in 1946 and held a variety of engineering and technical management positions, rising to the position of Chief Engineer. Lucas worked on a number of projects, including the Stratocruiser, the Supersonic Transport (SST), and the YC-14. While at Boeing, Lucas was part of the team that built the specially unfolding Christmas tree that is used every year in the Pacific Northwest Ballet's production of The Nutcracker.
After his retirement in 1987, Lucas and his wife Jane enjoyed RV camping, gem hunting, gold mining, and travel to far-off locales - Alaska to Africa, New Zealand to Mexico. Lucas was a talented musician and a skilled woodcarver. Lucas also believed in serving others and was a key volunteer in the early years of the South Seattle Crime Prevention Council. Luke traveled to Washington, DC in 1990 on behalf of the Council to accept the Points of Light Award, a recognition of its important service to the community.
Lucas was preceded in death by his first wife Betty, his second wife Jane, and thirteen brothers and sisters.
Lucas is survived by his sister Virginia Pierce, his children David Kimes (Sheryl), Susan Trower (Tandy), Peter Kimes (Sun Min), Lori Cullinan (Jim), and Jan Milligan (Doug), and eight grandchildren.
