Samuel was born in Daðastöðum, Skarðshreppi, Skagafjarðarsýsla, Iceland. His Icelandic name was Sigurður Bjarnason. He married Sarah Anderson who was also born in Iceland. Her Icelandic name was Sigríður Andrésdóttir. They were first living in North Dakota as that is where their first son is born. They came up to Alberta, Canada around 1894. Sarah had a sister Annie Andrésdóttir who was married to Gillis Goodman. Annie and Gillis Goodman also lived in Ponoka, Alberta.

Many old timers in Ponoka will regret to learn of the death of Sam Bernstein. Deceased resided here for a number of years, being employed on the section, and moved to Stettler, and from there to Calgary. He went overseas with the Canadian forces, but was invalided home, and was in the hospital practically ever since. Besides a wife he leaves four children to mourn his death. Mr. and Mrs. Goodman attended the funeral, Mrs. Bernstein being the latter's sister.
