In 1910, the McPhails resided in Los Angeles District 70, California. Laughlin was age 29, Edith 22, and a daughter Olive was age one month.
By 1915, the family moved to Everett, Washington, where they resided on Bell's Court. Laughlin McPhail was listed as a conductor. The family remainded in Everett until 1927, when they moved to Seattle. They resided on Queen Anne Hill at 1306 Queen Anne Av, and Laughlin McPhail was listed with occupation of Conductor.
In 1930, the census in Seattle also shows Laughlin McPhail as a railroad conductor, and his wife and two children are living with him.
There were at least three children born to Laughlin and Edith - daughter Olive was born in 1910, son Winston born 1915, and a son Richard was born 1925.
