William was born in Cavetown near Elphin, Co. Roscommon to James Acheson and Mary Berryhill. He married Jane Notley Feb. 1841. In a letter to his daughter Jane Acheson Stephenson Byers, who was living in Pennsylvania in the United States, James wrote, "I now must tell you something of your Brothers and Sisters. Wm. is married to Bob Notley's Daughter and has three children – one son and two daughters"(as of the date of the letter, 27 Dec 1848). Their children were James (1844-1912, George Robert (1853-1928), Margaret (1858-1868), Harriet, Elizabeth "Lizzie", and Sarah (birth and death dates unknown for the latter three). He was a member of the Church of Ireland.
