James Acheson was born to William Robert Acheson and his wife Eleanor (maiden name unknown). He married Mary Berryhill circa 1808 in Annaduff, Co. Leitrim. They were the parents of: Jane (1809-1882), Eleanor (1810-), William (1813-1879), Catharine (1815-), Robert (1816-1828), Elizabeth (1818-1889), Anne (1820-1863), George (1822-1849), John (1825-1899), Robert (1830-1870), and Marie (1832-). James was a member of the Church of Ireland and, according to letters he wrote to his daughter Jane, owned several hundred acres of land in the Cavetown, Boyle, area of Co. Roscommon. Local newspaper records show that he was frequently selected as a juror for quarterly court cases.
