Bettie L. Bottone, 88, of Bradford, a loving mother, and grandmother, died unexpectedly at her home on Sunday, June 24, 2012.

She was born in Farmers Valley on March 30, 1924 to Lois and Leslie Scowden.

In 1945 she married Joseph A Bottone a local painting contractor whom preceded her in death on October 5th, 1979.

Bettie was a graduate of Bradford High School and received a Nutritional Consultants Degree from Penn State University. She had also studied art at the Chautauqua Institute, attended the Norton School of Art in Palm Beach, Florida and had private art lessons with the famous artist Wallace Larson for many years. Bettie's first love was art, which she excelled at, and won many awards for her oil paintings over the years.

Bettie worked as a secretary for Lobitz & Reichenbach, and Dresser Manufacturing and later as an office manager at the Bradford office of the American Federation of Labor as well as being one of Zippo's very first employees. In later years she worked at Ott & McHenry Pharmacy as well as teaching art at Bradford Central Christian High School for almost ten years. In 1956 she opened Jo-Bet Ceramics and ran her business successfully until 2001.

Bettie touched so many lives with her warmth, love, wit and unique take on life. Growing up in the Great Depression and losing her father at a young age shaped Bettie into a warm loving and resourceful person who appreciated everything she had and would share it unselfishly to anyone in need.

Surviving are her twin sons, Fran (Janet) Bottone of Bradford and Joseph (Lauren) Bottone of Limestone, two grandchildren, Francis (Dana) Bottone of Red Bank, NJ, and Michael L. Bottone of San Francisco, CA, one brother, Evan (Nola) Scowden of Round Rock, TX and several nieces and nephews, all of which she treated as her own. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother Leslie Scowden.

Family will be receiving friends on Thursday June 28, 2012 from 11:00am to 1:00pm in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc. 33 South Avenue, Bradford, where funeral and committal will be held at 1:00pm with the Fr. Henry Andrae, pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Sharon, officiating. Burial will be in Willow Dale Cemetery.
