Martha Wencel, 90, of Lodi passed away suddenly on Sunday, September 3, 2001. She was born Martha Mayer on July 11, 1921 in Lodi. Martha attended local schools including Lodi Union High School. She married Benjamin Smith in 1947 and he preceded her in death in 1954. She was later married to Daniel Wencel for 33 years. In addition to being a homemaker, Martha was employed as a telephone operator for many years with Bell Telephone. After raising her daughters, she returned to school and earned her degree and became an LVN. Martha was employed at Lodi Memorial Hospital, Lodi Community Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital, and many private in-home care positions in a career that lasted 30 years. She was also a volunteer for the American Red Cross Disaster Services.
She was preceded in death by her husband Daniel Wencel in 1996 and by a daughter Diana Hettick in 1988.
In addition she was prec3eded by: brothers, Bill, Hank, Julius, and John Mayer and sisters, Hilda Radcliff, Annette Ackerman, Emma Bianchetti, Dolly Collins, Edna Schmidt and Irene Mayer.
She is survived by her daughters, 6 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Martha was a loving and giving gracious woman. Her energy, love and deep faith will be missed by her loving family and all who knew her.
