In 1910 she and her parents and six siblings lived in a house they owned, mortgage free, in Columbia Township, Dubois County, IN. Her father worked as a night watchman for a railroad train.

In 1930 she and her husband and their two children lived in a house they owned in a suburb of French Lick, IN. Their home was valued at $1500, and they did not have a radio. He worked as a cook in a hotel club.

In 1940 she and Herbert and their three children lived in an apartment they were renting for $34 a month at 714 East Washington Street in South Bend, IN. He worked as a cook in a hotel's club, with an income in 1939 of $1035 for 52 weeks of work.
