435 West Troy Avenue Indianapolis Marion County Indiana, 46225
Holy Cross Cemetery traces it beginning back to 1861 when a parish of Irish immigrants opened St. John Cemetery, which was later renamed Holy Cross Cemetery. Thirty years later, a group of German Catholics opened St. Joseph Cemetery nearby. Over time the two adjacent cemeteries grew into two cemeteries in one location, each maintaining its own character.
The cemetery is located in Center Township (NE quadrant of Section 23 Township 15N Range 3E) on the southwest corner of W Kelly Street and S Meridian Street.
Indiana Cemetery Locations, Volume 1, published by the Indiana Genealogical Society (02 April 2005), gives the primary cemetery name as Holy Cross Cemetery and as Saint Joseh Cemetery. The cemetery is listed in the Cemetery and Burial Grounds Registry of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and in the State Historical Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) with Cemetery Record Number CR-49-8 (Holy Cross / Saint Joseph). The Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory (IHSSI) survey number for Holy Cross / Saint Joseph Cemetery is 098-392-02696 with the dataset compiled in 1991.
