Lawrence was the oldest child of "Web" Crowder and Orena Cooper. In 1900, Lawrence lived with his parents and two siblings on a farm they were renting in Columbia Township, Dubois County, Indiana. He was enumerated at home in the same township on the 1910 U.S. Census, along with six siblings: Sophia E., John E., Emmet E., Hazel E., Grace, and Tracy

By 1920, he and three other working men were boarders in the home of 60-year-old Eugene W. Fallis at 2901 Bond Avenue in East Saint Louis, Illinois. He worked as a fireman for a steam railroad company.

Before 1940, he married Josephine M. Skaggs. (It is unclear if that was her birth name or a married name.) They were enumerated in 1940 in a house they owned at 8800 (probably Old) Bunkum Road in Caseyville, Illinois. The home was valued at $3500. He worked as an engineer for a railroad, with an income in 1939 of $2500 for 52 weeks of work.
