Milton Milam Dodson
Milton Milam Dodson was born in Fort Bend Texas in 1839. His parents were Archelaus Dodson and Sarah Bradley. They had come from North Carolina to Texas very early, around 1826. Archelaus was a participant in the Texas Revolution battles and Sarah designed and sewed the first tricolor Lone Star Flag of Texas. It was carried by the revolutionary army in 1836 in the siege of Bexar. The Dodson family moved to Live Oak County Texas in 1860.
After serving in the 33rd Texas Calvary confederate army in the civil war, Milton married Mary Susan Burris in 1869. Her brother, Martin Culver had returned from the war and started collecting stray cattle, putting his brand on all he could find. Milton was his ranch foreman for a while and then they began a partnership with a 600 acre ranch near Penitas, Texas. They first raised sheep, but switched over to cattle when that became more profitable. In 1870, Martin Culver built a large ranch house around a building that was already standing. It was painted London purple with white trim and the ranch was called Rancho Perdido (Lost Ranch). When Martin Culver moved to Kansas in 1878, Milton bought out his share of the ranch and the couple raised a large family of 9 children, 5 girls and 4 boys. The family all worked hard through good and bad times.
Milton and Susan were pillars of their community and were well known all around South Texas. Susan Burris Dodson died in 1929. Milton remained on his beloved ranch for over 60 years, until old age forced him to move to Mathis, Texas, with his daughter Ruth. Milton died in 1932. Susan and Milton are both buried in the Wade cemetery in Jim Wells County, Texas, representatives of the hardy "Texas Spirit" that it took to survive in the brush country of South Texas.
