Mary Susanna Burris Dodson was born on 23 September 1848, in Goliad, Texas. She was the daughter of Eliza Smythe and Basil Riggs Burris. Orphaned at a young age, she spent her young years with her Uncle Peyton Smythe's family in Bexar County. She married Milton Dodson on March 18, 1869. They moved to their ranch home in Jim Wells County where they lived for the next 60 years. They had nine children. She died on 30 April, 1929 , with her daughter, Mrs. George Roddy by her side. As one of the oldest residents of Jim Wells County, she was known and loved all over South Texas. She was survived by her husband, Milton, age 94, daughters, Mrs. George Roddy of Corpus Christi, Miss Ruth Dodson of Mathis, and Miss Zula Dodson of San Antonio: two sons, Kilmer Dodson of Orange Grove, and Martin Dodson of Arizona. She was survived by nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by daughters Miranda Reynolds and Catherine Dodson and sons Archeleus and William. She was buried in the Dodson family plot, Casa Blanca Cemetery. Her funeral was attended by many friends.
