AUGUST BERKHOLTZ

August Berkholtz, 88? (photo) of Reedsville, retired carpenter and the first treasurer of the village when it was incorporated, died Monday at his home in the village. He continued active at his trade until three years ago.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the St. John-James Evangelical Lutheran Church, Reedsville. The Rev. Elwood Haberman will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was born in Germany in 1865 and when a child his parents moved to Manitowoc County. His father who settled on a farm near Reedsville died of smallpox six years later leaving the mother and six small children to provide their own living.

Mr. Berkholtz had limited schooling in a log building near the farm and later went to a Lutheran School in Reedsville. In 1889 he married Augusta Brandt.
He continued in the carpenter trade that he learned at the age of 18, and when Reedsville was incorporated he was elected the first treasurer. After 11 years
Mr. and Mrs. Berkholtz moved to a farm in Maple Groove.
Twenty-two years later they returned to Reedsville. In 1939 the couple observed their golden wedding. Mrs. Berkholtz died in 1950.

Survivors are two sons, Arthur of Brillion and Edward of Maple Grove; four daughters, Mrs. August Schanke and Mrs. George Persohn of Reedsville and Mrs. H.T. Hahn and Mrs. Roland Mattes of Collins; two sisters, Mrs. Louis Boettcher of Medford and Mrs. Bertha Porath of Wausau; 10 grandchildren and 19 great grand-children.

Friends may call at the Reedsville Funeral Home after 7 p.m. Wednesday. The casket will be moved to the church at 10 a.m. Friday.
