Eli Donaldson was the son of Timothy Donaldson and Abigail Elinwood. He was also the husband of 1) Emily Huntington and 2) Polly Avery Benedict, widow of Stephen Benedict.
Eli's father and grandfather both served in the American Revolution. Eli came from a very religious family. Along with his father, Timothy, and brother, Asa, he served in the Presbyterian church choir in Butternuts, NY. In 1821 Eli served as an officer (cornet) in the NY 11th Cavalry Regiment, Otsego County, NY. In 1834, along with his parents, uncles, siblings and children Eli changed the family surname from 'Danielson' to 'Donaldson,' believing that 'Donaldson' was the original family name back in 1600's Scotland.
Eli was a farmer. After his father's death in 1843 he moved with his second wife to Madison County, NY. In the 1860 Federal Census Eli's real estate value was listed as $675 and personal estate value listed as $500. At the end of his life he was living with his daughter Mary Donaldson Niles' family. He was involved in several land sales with his son-in-law, Alex Niles, and also, his stepson, Oliver Benedict. Eli was buried in the Oneida cemetery where the Niles family was later buried. Gravestone missing.
