His siblings were: Genora Morefield, Edgar Wales, Adaresta Farrar, Elton and Eli Wales, Alice Dunlap, and Arthur Wales. He was first married to Julia Goodspeed Wales, and their marriage had a tragic end, when Julia died as a result of the birth of their son, Merton Walter Wales, on Christmas Eve, 1882.
He got married, a second time, to Francis (Frankie) Montgomery Wales. They had four children together: Harley Smith Wales, Nettie Wales Harrington, Rispah Wales Ferge, and Julia Wales Kinney. He had at least twelve grandchildren altogether from both marriages.
