On the 13th of April, 1864, Uncle Fred came to Wisconsin with Aunt Laura and the eight children. Arriving in town, no one was there to meet them because they had not sent a line to tell the time they would get to Wis. All the same they started on foot down the track. Arriving at the house of Charles, Elton, the fourth child went to the lounge sick. A cold, his mother thought, for on the train a woman had raised the window above his head as he lay asleep. Next day, Dr. Hamlin was called and diphtheria was the ominous word he uttered. The boy lived but fifteen days. We believed he was better at the last but a neighbor gave him bread and jelly and he soon was worse and died.
