The deceased was born at Hanover, Germany, Dec. 11th, 1856, his parents being the late August and Madaline Brandes. In 1869 he accompanied his parents and other members of the family to this country. They came direct to Wisconsin locating at Calvary, Fond du Lac county where they remained two years and then the family moved onto a farm in the town of Rantoul this county. Mr. Brandes assisted his parents on the farm until his marriage to Miss Bertha Pagel of Woodville on Oct. 1, 1895 when they moved onto a farm in North Chilton town which he purchased. They remained on that farm for nine years and then disposing of it purchased a home on Brooklyn street in this city, where they resided until a few years ago when they moved to their present home.
Mr. Brandes was an industrious, hard working man, attending strictly to his own affairs but always having time to be courteous and neighborly. He was a devoted husband and father and did everything possible for the advancement of his family. He was honest in all his dealings, and in this county where he spent nearly all his life he was well thought of by all who knew him.
The funeral was held from the Reformed church, Rev. W. a. Arpke officiating. Interment was in the Breed cemetery.
He is survived by his widow, three sons, Roland of Edgewater, Col., Miss Viola, Alvin and George of this city. He is also survived by two brothers, August and William Brandes of Hilbert, two sisters, Mrs. Augusta Keller of this city and Mrs. Eliza Hedrich of Rantoul.
