HERSCHEL LEON KEPLINGER, 75, of 18016 Sand Wedge Drive, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at Washington County Hospital. Born March 24, 1927, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Howard Clayton and Lona Etta Widdows Keplinger.

He was the supervisor of service for Columbia Gas of Maryland for 37 years, retiring in 1982. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was a member of St. James Brethren Church. He was a member of Potomac Post 202 Williamsport American Legion, Mason Dixon Travel Club, Hagerstown Chapter 623 AARP and National AARP.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nellie V. Monn Keplinger, whom he married in 1946; three daughters, Judith A. Fager of Ringgold, Carolyn J. Poole of Hagerstown and Linda Bowers of Clear Spring; a son, Howard K. Keplinger of Hagerstown; two sisters, Ruby Huff of Boonsboro and Ethel Geaslen of Hagerstown; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, John Keplinger, Paul Keplinger, Donald Keplinger, Rudolph Keplinger and Charles Keplinger.

Services were held at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, Hagerstown; burial was in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
