JOHN A. ZIMMERMAN
DIED THIS MORNING

Pioneer Tailor, a Native of Germany,
Succumbs to Infirmaties of Old Age

John A. Zimmerman, pioneer mer-
chant tailor of this city, died at 7 o’-
clock this morning at the residence of
his daughter, Caroline, wife of J. W.
Bedwell, 804 West Franklin street of
the infirmities attending advanced
years, aged 89 years, 2 months and 13
days.

The funeral services will be held at
the Baptist church Saturday afternoon
at 2:30, the pastor, Rev. Spindler, of-
ficiating. Interment in Oak Hill ceme-
tery. Those desiring to view the re-
mains may do so between the hours
of three and five tomorrow afternoon.

Biography
John A. Zimmerman was born in
Henorstead, Germany, Nov. 26, 1827.
In 1842, when but 15 years of age, he
emigrated to the United States and
was shortly afterwards bound out to a
tailor for the purpose of learning the
trade. His early life in this country
was spent at Plainsfield, New Jersey,
and it was here in 1850 that he was
united in marriage to Miss Eliza M.
Drake, who departed this life in this
city Feb. 22, 1904. In 1861 he moved
with his family to Mason City in this
state, where he opened a tailor shop.
In 1875 he moved to this city and had
since resided here. While in this city
he conducted a tailoring establish-
ment until incapacitated by old age a
number of years ago. During his long
married life, 14 children came to bless
the union, five passing away in early
life. The survivors are,
Albert Zimmerman of Council Grove, Kan.;
Maggie Clemens of Elsworth, Kan.;
Ida Hendricks of this city;
Simeon Zimmerman of this city;
Mrs. E. T. Mills, of this city;
Frank Zimmerman of this city;
George W. Zimmerman of Stonington;
Mrs. G. E. McCurdy of Benton.
He is also survived by 25 grand and
12 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Zimmerman was a lifelong mem-
ber of the Baptist church and with
Mrs. Zimmerman in her lifetime was
active in the affairs of the church in
this city. He was an honorable and
upright citizen and his cheerful disp-
sition and kindly nature was always
evident even to the last days of his life.
