A son of Frederick Hoffman and his wife, the former Mary Ritter, Emanuel W. Hoffman was born 8 April 1879 at the family home 717 Washington in Quincy Illinois.

In 1900 he married Jessie Surlage. Mrs. Jessie Hoffman died in 1921. Emanuel W. Hoffman later wed Mabel Hurdle.

Emanuel Hoffman, known familiarly as "Manny," learned the barber's trade from his brother Frederick G. Hoffman, who owned a barber's shop at Sixth and Washington in Quincy Illinois. Manny Hoffman was 16 when he began to learn his trade. He continued as a barber for 64 years.

Manny Hoffman ran his own barber shop on the first floor of the W. C. U. building. He ran this shop over 22 years. He next opened his own shop on Hampshire in Quincy. He owned other barber shops including in Missouri and his final shop at 120 South Fourth street in Quincy Illinois.

Emanuel W. "Manny" Hoffman passed away aged 81 at a Quincy Illinois hospital. In addition to his first wife who died in 1921, four siblings predeceased him. His second wife, Mrs. Mabel Hoffman, along with various other family, survived to mourn him.

Reverend Joseph O'Brien led the funeral held at St. Peter's Catholic church. Reverend John Spreen presided graveside at St. Boniface cemetery in Quincy Illinois.
