Wallace L. Shaffstall, 60, of 11 North James Street, Rocky Grove, died at 9 am today, following an illness of about six months, in Franklin Hospital, where he'd been for three weeks. He was born in Wayne Township, Crawford County, April 18, 1897, son of Arthur and Jennie Whitman Shaffstall.
He was reared and spent most of his early life in the Cochranton area, moving to Franklin district about 40 years ago. He served during World War I with the sapper engineers in the Fifth Provisional Co. of the First Provisional Regimental Battalion. He was employed as a machinist at the Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co. for many years, was an ardent hunter and sportsman, and had a hobby of raising flowers. He was a member of the Rocky Grove Avenue Presbyterian Church. He belonged to the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Franklin Aerie No. 328, and the Loyal Order of Moose, Franklin Lodge No. 83.
He married Vera B. Dingman June 22, 1921, and she survives, with a daughter, Leah Mae, at home; a son, Lyle Meade Shaffstall of Akron, OH; five brothers, Lee of Franklin RD 3, Roy of Cochranton, Archie B. of Guys Mills, Clair and Harry of Franklin RD 3. Deceased are two sisters and a brother, Mrs. Pearl Franklin Hughes, Mrs. Effie Boughner, and Earl Shaffstall.
Services will be at 2 pm Monday at Buchanan-Schmidt Funeral Home with Rev. Calvin T. Weimer, minister of Rocky Grove Avenue Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be in Franklin Cemetery.
