Bert E. Hayes, 78, of Dubuque passed away Thursday, November 21, 2013 at home.

Services will be at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main Street where friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Military rites will be conducted by the Marine Corps League. Burial will be at Centerville, Iowa Cemetery at a later date.

Bert was born November 12, 1935 in Centerville, Iowa, son of Zimmer and Lucretia Belle (Witall) Hayes.

He married Hazel Brown l954 in Des Moines, IA.

He served two years active duty in the U.S. Army and four years in the U.S. Reserves from 1956 to 1962.

He retired from Inland Molasses in 1984 after many years.

Bert was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed the outdoors and watching western movies. He was a very kind and generous person. He also enjoyed caring for his dogs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a great grandson, Andrew; six brothers and four sisters.

A Bert Hayes Memorial has been established.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and doctors at Unity Point Health-Finley Hospital and the staff at Hospice of Dubuque for their loving care.
