Rachel (Cosad) Huson, Died 1 Jun 1883

HUSON.—In this village on Friday, June 1st, 1883, of Typhoid pneumonia, Mrs. Rachel Cosad Huson, aged 69 years.
Mrs. Huson was born at Plainfield, New Jersey, January 3rd, 1814. When a young girl she moved with her parents, Samuel Cosad and Rachel Smalley Cosad, to the town of Junious, Seneca county, New York, where she resided until June 13th, 1832, when she was married to Samuel Huson, and came immediately to reside here. Three children were born of their marriage—Lurissa, Mary Ann, and John C. The latter died December 25th, 1853, aged 7 years. Samuel Huson, the husband, died September 24th, 1869. Samuel Cosad, her father, was a brother of the late Hannah Harpending. He died in 1866 at the age of 98 years. A sister of Samuel Cosad married Joshua Compton, who were the parents of Lydia A. Beekman, widow of Benjamin B. Beekman, deceased. Mrs. Huson's father was twice married, first to Rachel Smalley, December 16, 1792, and again to Sarah McCarn, Nov. 10, 1844. Ten children were the fruits of the first marriage, and one of the second, as follows: Anthony, born Dec 14, 1794; Hannah, born Feb 24 1797; Joel, born Feb. 14, 1799; David, born Feb. 19, 1802; Cady, born June 3, 1805; Samuel, born Dec. 3, 1807; James M., born Nov. 19, 1810; Rachel, born January 3, 1814; Eliza, born Oct. 27, 1816; Anthony, born May 28, 1819; Martin Van Buren, born Dec. 11, 1845. There are still living of the above, Joel, David, Samuel, James M., and Martin Van Buren.

It will be seen by the above that Mrs. Huson was one of the oldest residents of Dundee, having lived here over 50 years. Those who knew her best attest her many good qualities. Her example through life has been one eminently calculated to ennoble mankind, and the remarks at her funeral on Sunday last were indeed most appropriate to the occasion. Rev. S. F. Sanford officiated and he pointed to her long life among the people here, her good examples, her many noble qualities, her Christian virtues, and asked if her life was not one which it would be well for us all to follow. The services were held at the residence, and there was scarcely standing room in the house, while many congregated outside. Especially to our older citizens will she be missed, and her death must serve as a forcible reminder that they, too, must soon pass away, and their places be filled by others.
(The last three lines of the obituary are missing.)

Note: She was the eighth child of Samuel and Rachel (Smalley) Cosad.
